My friend Dan had fun dying. He was on an African Safari at Maasai Mara in southwest Kenya. They say this annual migration of millions of wildebeests and other wildlife is probably the greatest show on earth. It’s in my bucket list. Anyway, I was emailing Dan in July about it. He was in London. He said, “I’m going pretty soon, you better hurry up. I’m almost done with my bucket list - after that I can die.” A self-fulfilling prophecy? Because while checking off items in his bucket list in Kenya - Dan died. Lucky guy!

There is a region in Kenya located at the crossing of the Uganda Railway called Tsavo, which means a place of slaughter. Back in the day, caravans of Arab slavers on the way to Zanzibar left dead captives here to be eaten by lions, the most notorious being The Ghost And The Darkness told in The Man-eaters of Tsavo about two lions attacking workers building the railroad bridge in 1898. “So, your great-great-great—great-grand-uncle helped build the bridge?” I asked. Menka said, “No. At the time, he lived in Tsavo….”
