Ant Wisdom

Molave

I was already sitting for hours by the shade of a tree in front of the house watching passersby in their Sunday best, then looked down and gazed again at long lines of orange ants that come and go, meet and greet and ant-kiss with their antennae (sometimes with their tiny legs). Some are errant but most stayed in long lines that all lead to a mound, but each one - without exception, carried sundry morsels of food for the rainy day…. I have sought instruction from the ants and tried to appropriate to myself their industry.

Caught In The Eye

Jimenez
Misamis Occidental

Fishing with a net does not only bring in fish, people too. The kind of fish caught largely depends on the size of the eye (net opening). Usually a net (at least three meters wide and up 200 meters long) is dragged by two boats on to a reef to slowly sweep fish back in a semicircle to the shallows. Just before reaching shore, the boats meet up to close the gap. What’s inside the net are for the fishermen, but fish sticking to the eyes belong to the people who will fight elbow to elbow for it….

Thinking Alike

Daloydoy
Cebu

Noticing his half-smile and empty stare by the window, the girl stood beside her boyfriend and asked. “What are you thinking about?” Silence. Then he replied, “The same as what you are thinking.” She cooed, swayed from side to side and in her softest voice said, “You’re naughty….”

Read My Lips

Daloydoy Daloydoy
Radio Show, Cebu

Why do you like me? I’m not handsome? I’m not rich? I’m not smart? Tell me the reason mi amor, why do you like me so much??? Without speaking a word, she dropped her eyes, a little embarrassed, then pouted her lips to point - at her boyfriend’s crotch. (Recorded laughing)

Take A Hike

Cebu
Philippines

You have to go down towards the valley floor to a little lake then up a slope. As you go up, the hill in front of you rises, revealing a nipa hut and cows grazing amidst the backdrop of a setting sun and an explosion of pastel colored clouds that linger in the twilight. We usually stop and sit and wait until darkness falls before heading home….

Snake!

Sudlon
Cebu

I wondered what’s causing the commotion. A snake! All the girls shrieked, terrified.  When I arrived at the scene, Angie already deftly handled the snake with a forked twig pinning its head on the ground. Then she held the head with her hand as it curled around her arm. “It’s a male snake. Look, it has two penises!” The girls shrieked again but this time, of delight….

Skydive Practice

Mactan
Philippines

“Wind what? Ahh wind tunnel! We don’t have it. This is how we practiced.” (as in left photo). “Chicken?” He teased. And of course I said “No. Let me in.” As he removed the first bolt out of the plane’s door he said, “You’re on the team!" "What are you doing?" I asked perplexed. "It's our plane. We don't need this door tomorrow when we fly." "Your'e joking, right?"  I said. "No. Now pass me the screwdriver...."

Knowing Home

Philippines

When you see a man in a rush to cross the street up to the centerline, then completes the crossing by walking leisurely, sometimes diagonally, to be almost within hitting distance of an oncoming vehicle, you know you’re in the Philippines. When a passenger sits in such a way that he’s inches away from within reach, or farthest from the jeepney driver hoping other passengers fill the gap so he can pass the fare, you know you’re in the Philippines. When you hear “Pssssst!” on the street and you look back, “Who called?” You know you’re in the Philippines!

Fresh Sea Water

Bantayan Island
Cebu, Philippines

With a red plastic container a boy drew water from the sea. It was low tide and the rocky seabed emerged showing patches of sea-grass, underwater crevasse and a fresh-water well - amidst salty seawater! How is it possible? Earthquake - "It does dramatic changes to a landscape and may sometimes make overland streams go under while allowing it to continue to flow."

So, subterranean streams, from the surrounding hills, feed this well. I removed my shoes to have a closer look then buried my face on this extraordinary sprout to taste it. “Fresh water!”
