Juveniles are pelagic while adults stay in caves or under ledges of reefs. They forage at night with their large eyes. They are slow-moving and docile. When threatened, they swallow water to bloat themselves into a ball and for spikes to stand up making it really ugly and difficult to swallow. If this isn’t discouraging enough, they have strong jaws to fight any predator! Taken out of the water, they inflate by swallowing air and die. Taken to shops, they sell as souvenirs - all puffed-up, with spikes and all…. Before buying, look at the photo - made by a puffer.

They walk down the streets or idly sit by a corner, but a whole lot gather in a piazza near a Shinto shrine. Their getup shouts for attention but somehow shy, and wants to be left alone. “Picture?” I asked. “Sure!” the “black fairy” replied….

Ayako deftly negotiated roads winding through mountains on the edge of cliffs. At some point, it got so narrow, the car has to crawl inch by inch to pass through tricky curves. With years of left hand driving, my brain is used to interpret that cars coming at you on the right side of the road is on the wrong lane, and is bound to bump your nuts out. But we reached our destination unscathed where I met three other Ayakos and Ayakas, and Akikos and Akikas, Atchushi and Yuichi. It will take some time before you get used to these names.
