Anami Oshima
Offshore, Japan
Juveniles are pelagic
while adults stay in caves or under ledges of reefs. They forage at night with
their large eyes. They are slow-moving and docile. When threatened, they
swallow water to bloat themselves into a ball and for spikes to stand up making
it really ugly and difficult to swallow. If this isn’t discouraging enough,
they have strong jaws to fight any predator! Taken out of the water, they inflate by swallowing air and die. Taken to shops, they sell as souvenirs - all puffed-up,
with spikes and all…. Before buying, look at the photo - made by a puffer.
